Education
The Ethiopian government provides just half a day of free primary and
secondary schooling five days a week. The JeCCDO project office in Debre Berhan
coordinates tutorial programmes for children from 7 - 16 years of age. Tutorial
classes are an opportunity to improve academic performance; they are based on
peer group discussion and problem solving. Children help each other understand
topics they have not understood in school, with tutors on hand to provide assistance.

During the period 2007 to 2011 JeCCDO aims to improve the educational
performance of a minimum of 4,000 children in Debre Berhan.
School Support
Since 1992 JeCCDO has provided support to Basso School in Debre Berhan. It has
helped the school buy essential items such as blackboards, stationery and a
photocopier. With the help of Hambleden Valley Africa Link, JeCCDO set up school
welfare clubs in five schools in Debre Berhan, helping the poorest students to continue
with their education through buying school uniforms and sanitary materials for girls.
JeCCDO works with the schools to help them set up income-generating activities to
assist them with becoming financially independent. |
