Income generation
Poverty is one of the main obstacles to ensuring children's welfare. Ethiopia is amongst the poorest countries in the world and past decades of war and the current HIV/AIDS epidemic mean that many of those of working age have died or are invalids and unable to earn a wage. SMCF and JeCCDO aim to facilitate projects whereby community members and families can stabilise their income.
During the period 2007 to 2011 JeCCDO aims to improve the income capacity of 4,000 of the poorest households in Debre Berhan.
Over the past few years JeCCDO has trained many women in Debre Berhan how to run a small business. This is done through Self Help Groups where women come together to receive repayable loans and support each other in their business enterprises. Typical business activity in Debre Berhan include Kik (broken beans) production and selling, producing and selling cloth, making and selling Areke (a local liquor) Injera (Ethiopian bread) making and selling and fattening sheep for market
