Education
The Ethiopian government provides just half a day of free primary and secondary schooling for five days a week. The JeCCDO project office in Bahir Dar coordinates tutorial programmes for children from 7 - 16 years of age. Tutorial classes are an opportunity to improve academic performance; they are based on peer group discussion and problem solving. Children help each other to understand issues they have not grasped in school, and tutors are on hand to provide assistance. Tutorial groups are also an opportunity for children to learn about other issues such as HIV/Aids, gender and welfare.
Between 2007 - 2011 JeCCDO aims to improve the academic performance of 6,000 children in Bahir Dar and help over 600 children who are not currently in education to go to school.
The Public library – Bahir Dar
JeCCDO obtained land from the Bahir Dar local government office to build a library. The library is the only one in town and is a resource that is used to its capacity. For poor people books are a luxury they cannot afford. The library allows people to read in a pleasant and clean environment. Over six hundred people a day make use of it. The American Embassy has opened a corner of the library and has donated two computers for people to find out about learning opportunities in the United States.
The library also has meeting room which it hires out at reasonable rate. |
