Health and Sanitation

JeCCDO's main focus is working to improve the lives of orphan and vulnerable children; to do this effectively it is necessary to ensure that the children are growing up in a healthy environment.

During the period 2007 to 2011 JeCCDO aims to improve the health of 15,000 people in Bahir Dar.

Sanitation

Lack of access to latrines can cause major problems for everybody in the ommunity due to the risk of typhoid and cholera bacteria in raw sewage and stagnant water. The latrines ensure that human waste is disposed of safely and does not end up in water supplies or in the vicinity of young children. Safe drinking water is also extremely important and JeCCDO works with local communities to install standpipes.

HIV/AIDS

Bahir Dar suffers from the highest HIV prevalence rate in Ethiopia at 23.4% (UN AIDS 2003) Our partner JeCCDO works in different ways to address the issue of HIV Aids through working with youth clubs educating young people about safe sexual practices using different mediums such as music, dance and theatre. The clubs are supported with stationery, communication and musical instruments to reach more youth within and outside their Kebeles.

Public awareness-raising activities such as coffee drinking ceremonies, after-working-hours community meeting conversations, and neighbours' discussion forums focusing on signs and symptoms of HIV infection, tuberculosis and malaria cases are organised and supported. These activities have encouraged many community members to visit health institutions as soon as they observed the signs and symptoms that might lead to tuberculosis. Importantly people are encouraged to be tested for HIV/AIDS.

For those people living with HIV and AIDS practical support is provided such as blankets, bed sheets and monthly financial and medical support delivered through youth clubs and community committees.
