Orphan Support in Bahir Dar
In towns like Bahir Dar there are increasing numbers of children who have been forced to live on the streets as one or both of their parents have died and their relatives are not able to support them. Bahir Dar has the fastest-growing rate of HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia and many children have lost both parents as a consequence. Recent estimates suggest that 26% of the children in the town are either partly or fully orphans. These children then have to leave school and live and work on the streets. The Orphan Support Programme is a means of providing resources to relatives to look after vulnerable children within the family. Currently JeCCDO supports 292 children in Bahir Dar through this programme.
The programme is run by community members (Read about our approach) and is designed to become financially sustainable. Our approach encourages the community to look after its orphans and to turn personal tragedy into opportunities that benefit everybody.
During the period 2007 - 2011 JeCCDO aims to provide care to a minimum of 600 orphan and vulnerable children in Bahir Dar through its Orphan Support Programme.
