Urban Agriculture
JeCCDO’s urban agriculture centre in Bahir Dar has a national reputation for
innovation and expertise. The Ethiopian government has visited the centre on many
occasions, its officers learning techniques which they have replicated in other urban
areas.
At the centre local people are taught a variety of urban agricultural activities.
These include vegetable and fruit growing and bee-keeping using organic and bio diverse
techniques. These activities will allow carers of orphan children to improve the
nutritional intake of their family and sell surplus produce to gain additional income.
Silkworm production is taught from the centre. Trainees learn all aspects
of production and are trained how to replicate what they have learnt at
their own premises. With both silkworm production and bee-keeping,
trainees are taught how to market and sell their produce.
JeCCDO is also teaching cheese production.
The production of hard cheeses was unknown in the region.
Its use is valuable because of extended shelf life and
nutritional value. JeCCDO encourages local people to learn
the techniques and set up small cooperatives.
