Education
The Ethiopian government provides just half a day of free primary and
secondary schooling five days a week. The JeCCDO project office in Debre Zeit
coordinates tutorial programmes for children from 7 - 16 years of age. Tutorial
classes are an opportunity to improve academic performance; they are based on
peer group discussion and problem solving. Children help each other understand
topics they have not understood in school, with tutors on hand to provide assistance.

Empowering girls and women is a priority for JeCCDO. The position of
women in Ethiopian society means that girls are at a disadvantage whilst at
school and afterwards when they become adults. The picture opposite shows
a girls’ counselling centre built by JeCCDO in a school in Debre Zeit. Workshops are run with girls, their parents/carers and teachers to raise awareness of the problems girls face and to increase understanding and equal treatment. Issues such asHIV/Aids and sexual health are discussed freely and openly.
The club has 161 members out of 422 girls in the school. To sustain the club income-generating activities have been established such as a stationery
shop and horticultural activities.
