Income generation

Poverty is one of the main obstacles to ensuring children’s welfare. Ethiopia is amongst the poorest countries in the world and past decades of war and the current HIV/AIDS epidemic mean that many of those of working age have died or are invalids and unable to earn a wage. SMCF and JeCCDO aim to facilitate projects whereby community members and families can stabilise their income. During the period 2007 to 2011 JeCCDO aims to improve the income capacity of 4,000 of the poorest households in Debre Zeit.

MestuMestu

Mestu participates in a Self Help Group in Debre Zeit. Every month she pays in some money to the club along with other members. Mestu has taken out a loan which she has used to buy fuel which she sells in the marketplace at a small profit. She pays back her loan little by little every month. The income she receives from her selling has enabled her to send all of her four children to school; previously some of her children had to spend the days on the street selling items.

Mestu hopes to take part in training which will allow her to benefit from urban agriculture. She particularly wants to become involved in sheep rearing.
