Orphan Support
Income generation In towns like Debre Zeit there are increasing numbers of children living on the streets as one or both of their parents have died and their relatives are not able to support them. These children then have to leave school and get involved in child labour, often outside the security of a family.
The Orphan Support Programme is a means of providing resources to relatives to look after vulnerable children within the family. The programme is run by community members (read about this) and is designed to become financially sustainable. Our approach encourages the community to look after its orphans and to turn personal tragedy into opportunities that benefit everybody. During the period 2007 - 2011 JeCCDO aims to assist a minimum of 500 orphan and vulnerable children through its Orphan Support Programme.
Tesfa
Tesfa is aptly named - his name means 'Hope' in Amharic. He is 16 years old, and both of his parents are dead. Tesfa lives with his aunt in a one-bed shack. He had to stop going to school for three years because he had to work selling plastic bags on the street. His aunt, Tsehi, receives financial help from JeCCDO to help her support Tesfa. She also has taken a loan from JeCCDO and has used this to set up a small business selling bread.
Tesfa is now doing well at school - in fact he is a top student, particularly strong in maths and physics. He wants to become a manager in a factory. |
