Urban Agriculture
This rusty gate with a sign attached doesn't look like much but as signs go, in an area where people suffer from malnutrition, it doesn't get much more exciting than this.
How so? If you look closely and you could read Amharic you would read 'Vegetables sold here'
This sign tells us that people are successfully growing food for themselves but also that they have a surplus with which they are generating an income.
The person who wrote the sign is a woman who learnt how to grow vegetables from a neighbour who attended JeCCDO's urban agricultural Centre (pictured above) in Debre Zeit. This simple activity has brought about a great change in many poor people's lives in the town. |
