HIV / AIDS
Dire Dawa has suffered terribly in the past ten years from the ravages of HIV/AIDS. JeCCDO has worked closely with the community in two ways to help people come to terms with tragedy and to minimise future risk.
JeCCDO has trained community facilitators in counselling techniques for people who have undergone HIV/Aids tests. Local people can come to the centre (above) and talk in confidence without being judged. In a country where HIV/AIDS is a huge stigma, the availability of somebody to listen and support a person recently diagnosed is extremely important to psychological well-being.
JeCCDO has also set up an HIV/AIDS club in Dire Dawa. The club brings young people together to talk about HIV/Aids in an open and frank manner. Trained facilitators work with the group to encourage responsible sexual practices. The club members put on cultural events involving song and dance to educate other young people about the risks of HIV/AIDS.
