Livelihood Promotion Programme
Ethiopia is amongst the poorest countries in the world and past decades of war and the current HIV/AIDS epidemic mean that many of those of working age have died or are invalids and unable to earn a wage. SMCF and JeCCDO aim to facilitate projects whereby community members and families can increase their incomes. Without an income it is impossible for extended families to take in and look after orphan children. Livelihood promotion, is then, key to the work that JeCCDO does in Dire Dawa.
During the period 2007 to 2011 JeCCDO aims to enable 4,000 households in Dire Dawa to improve their income.
The Stone Cutters
The problem of youth unemployment in Ethiopia is a growing national problem.
In Dire Dawa JeCCDO brought together 30 young men and offered them training in stonecutting skills. Upon completion of the course the young men formed a cooperative company and were offered a contract from the local authority to build roads in the town.
During 2006 the cooperative was offered employment in the town of Bahir Dar and in addition trained local young men in stonecutting techniques. In 2007 the group have secured contracts with other town authorities in the country.
