Tutorial Classes
Children and their carers choose what subjects they learn in the tutorial groups; maths, science and English and, in some groups chemistry and biology, are learnt. Children are put into groups of 6 -8, and every child has an opportunity to raise an issue that they have not understood in school. Members of the group discuss the topic and try to explain it to each other. A child teaches another child and facilitators are always on hand to guide the children where necessary.
Tutorial groups are also an opportunity for children to learn about other matters such as HIV/AIDS, gender and welfare issues.
JeCCDO in Dire Dawa coordinates a team of educational facilitators who run the tutorial classes. Facilitators are paid only a small amount of expenses. They receive training from JeCCDO and in return gain teaching experience they can use to further their careers or employment opportunities. |
