Urban Agriculture
Water supply in Dire Dawa is critical. The area is very dry and prone to drought. Increasingly the weather has become more irregular with long dry seasons and floods. A regular supply of water is crucial for irrigation of crops.
Well construction is particularly important. The well built by JeCCDO (pictured opposite) may not look like much but it is a shared resource that enables people to water their crops.
As well as teaching local people how to grow vegetables in their backyards and providing sheep and chickens, JeCCDO is also building up a herd of cattle. Currently the herd is 20 strong and JeCCDO will soon lend cattle to individuals in the local community.
Once the cow has produced its 2 nd calf the individual then passes that calf on to another beneficiary. Local people take it in turns to collect hay and grass from the surrounding hills for cattle feed.
